About

Ryan Hervé has been shaping surfboards since 1995. At just fifteen, he picked up a planer and learned the craft the old-school way—before CAD software and CNC machines became standard. In 1999, he founded Nutz Surfboards, initially building boards he wanted to ride himself. Over the years, he worked on some of the world's best high-performance boards for renowned shapers like Al Merrick, JS, and DHD.

By 2009, after shaping 18 boards in just 11 days, Ryan realised that his life was all about extremes. He had become so busy making boards that he wasn’t surfing them. Determined to regain balance, he shifted to a more intentional approach, focusing on flow, craftsmanship, and quality over quantity. He prioritised surfing, family time, and letting his passion for board-building truly shine.

While Nutz Surfboards was rooted in high-performance designs, Ryan had always admired the artistry of traditional surfboards—resin tints, polished finishes, and meticulous detailing. It was a level of craftsmanship he aspired to reach.

This led him to launch a new surfboard label under his family name, Hervé. In a way, it was coming full circle—his very first boards, in 1995, had hand-drawn Hervé logos on them. The transition felt natural, and Hervé Surfboards quickly gained recognition, giving Ryan a deeper appreciation for his craft.

By 2019, Ryan had spent two decades as a full-time surfboard builder—well beyond the years of an apprenticeship, firmly establishing himself as a master of the trade. Today, every board he shapes is one he would proudly put his name on—because, quite literally, he does.

Core Values

Focus

Our focus is to personally equip surfers, whatever their ambition, to experience the joy of surfing at its purest. To build long term relationships with our customers. Sharing our knowledge with surfers so that together we can design the board that will be the most fun to ride.

We know that riding a board you love changes your whole surf and we want to build that board for you. We’re committed to using the very best materials & technology to make our boards.

All our surfboards are designed and built to improve the surfing experience as much as possible and with as little impact on the environment as possible.

We’re proud to be joined with Sustainable Surf on the ECOBOARD project, using plant-based low-VOC resin and recyclable foam cores Verified by Sustainable Surf. Not only do these new materials improve worker health and safety, but they also improve the boards' performance and durability.

We’re never going to have a huge warehouse with hundreds of boards. Instead, we invite you to come to spend time with us at the factory to learn and to watch the process of your board being made.
